How can African countries strengthen domestic financing for community-based HIV prevention while ensuring women have a central role in setting health priorities?

The Shape of Sovereignty is a focused IAS 2026 session bringing together government decision-makers, civil society leaders, funding partners and technical experts to advance African-led financing for HIV prevention.

The session will move beyond debate towards specific, time-bound commitments that can be followed over 12 months. Discussions will focus on strengthening accountability, protecting community-based prevention programmes and placing women’s leadership at the centre of health decision-making.

Why attend?

The session will explore how stakeholders can:

  • Strengthen African-led health financing and accountability
  • Protect and expand community-based HIV prevention programmes
  • Centre women’s leadership in health agenda-setting
  • Create a public record of commitments that can be tracked over 12 months

Featured speakers

  • Deputy Minister Joe Phaahla, South Africa
  • Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Douglas T. Mombeshora, Zimbabwe
  • Dr Morenike Ukpong, Nigeria
