Safe Motherhood Checklist

Tick off the milestones that protect you and your baby.

AWPCAB advocates and community members

These are the building blocks of a safe pregnancy and birth. Work through them with your antenatal clinic, tick each one as you go.

  • Book antenatal care (ANC) early, in the first trimester if you can
  • Attend all your scheduled antenatal visits
  • Take an HIV test in pregnancy and know your status
  • Take folic acid and iron supplements as advised
  • Make a birth plan and arrange a skilled birth attendant
  • If living with HIV, start PMTCT to protect your baby
  • Attend your postnatal check after delivery
  • Discuss family planning for after the birth
If you're living with HIV, taking your treatment and following PMTCT means the chance of passing HIV to your baby can be brought very low. Your care team is there to support you, not judge you.

Educational only, not a medical diagnosis.
